In New Jersey, nearly 200 streams hold naturally reproducing trout. Of those streams, only 36 are designated as Wild Trout Streams by @newjerseyfishandwildlife. Here, you won’t find any lunker trophies. But you may hook into a wild brown, or native brook trout. Their presence on the landscape divulges their trophy status, a value far exceeding any two-digit number found on measuring tape. . . . I pulled up on my rod with unnecessary force as a four inch brook trout breached the surface. A New Jersey native, just what I was after. And, after it broached the surface again, my line went slack, and I strung together an elaborate series of expletives. I flicked out my prince nymph for the same drift. In New Jersey Pinelands waters, chain pickerel reign king. You know you’ve found the sweet spot when a v-wake chases your fly, your line pulls taunt, and your rod snaps back as your monofilament cuts to the chain pickerel’s razor sharp teeth. Their teeth angle backward so that, when they get a hold of something like a sunfish or little bass, there is no escape. Compared to their Esox brothers, northern pike and musky, chain pickerel get no love. But I can hardly think of a better pursuit on the fly. So here’s to celebrating the neglected chain pickerel, the most overlooked gamefish of the east. . . . #chainpickerel #flyfishing #pinebarrens

A couple weeks ago, I helped a researcher from Maine capture this American woodcock in southern New Jersey. We fitted it with a GPS telemetry unit. Who here is ready for turkey season? . . For me, half the joy of spring turkey hunting is scouting before hand. Not only is it fun to wander around the woods for a couple hours dissecting the reason and placement of tracks, feathers, and scat, but it runs the added benefit of drastically improving your odds of success when season finally opens.
