The full moon lit up the sand flats I was fishing. I found both striped bass and bluefish, and they were keyed in on schools of micro peanut bunker. I spent six hours throwing soft plastics and flies at them. They kept biting. Searching for elusive weakfish from shore. In recent decades, the weakfish population has crashed along the Atlantic Coast. They reached an all time low biomass of 2.9 million pounds. The healthy biomass for a weakfish population is estimated at 22.4 million pounds. Their decline has largely been attributed to commercial by-catch mortality and the nondiscriminatory use of gill nets. This year, however, weakfish seem to be on the rebound. The weakfish bite was red hot at sunrise. They tore up the threading on my favorite fly and now I’m tasked with tying replacements. These suckers are elusive but damn fun when you get in on them. I even got @_morgan_catherine to join in on the festivities. She was about to release a weakfish I had just caught when I hooked into another.
